The Meta Orion prototype AR glasses, unveiled at Meta Connect 2024, are touted as the most advanced AR glasses ever made, potentially overshadowing Apple’s Vision Pro. These glasses use Micro LED projectors to overlay holograms on the real world, rather than a video passthrough, and feature a neural interface wristband for gesture control. The Orion glasses are lightweight, with frames made of magnesium and lenses of silicon carbide, offering a 70-degree field of view. They integrate Meta AI, enabling features like real-world object recognition, video calls, messaging, and games. The current prototypes require an external processor puck and have limited battery life of 2 hours, but Meta aims to refine the design and reduce the price to that of a high-end phone. The Orion glasses are currently for internal testing and developer use, with no immediate release date for a commercial version.
